Tapestry weaving – Refresher/beginners

This will be a beginner/refresher workshop on tapestry weaving techniques. Students will get an understanding of the structure and construction of a woven tapestry. They will learn to put a warp on the loom and prepare it for weaving. Students will learn basic weave structures, how to blend colours on the bobbin and in the weave; how to create diagonals, curves, hatching, various joining techniques, finishing techniques. Each student should come away with a small tapestry and extensive folder of notes at the end of the workshop.

Tutor: Patricia Armour

Patricia has been weaving tapestry for over 20 years. She has have exhibited in New York; Ferrara, Italy; Vienna, and London. This year Patricia won the supreme award at Creative Fibre Festival Wellington. She designed from photographs, drawings, paintings and prints which are put together as collages to reveal a narrative. Her work is inspired by the human form, ancient mythology, legend and the art of the Pre-Raphaelites and is full of symbolism. She expresses human emotions and experiences in my work and use the human figure and images from nature to convey a contemplative, tranquility.

Notes for Participants: Please bringSewing needles (not too fine) and sewing cotton (I use grey, though white and black is fine). Scissors, Masking tape, Measuring tape/ruler, Vivid permanent marker pen, pen and paper, tapestry frame.

Please bring your own lunch and snacks.

Tapestry frames – If you require to borrow one from the tutor a bond payable of $45 which is refundable at the end of the course needs to be paid to tutor on day 1 of the workshop.

Clogging dance workshop - Cancelled

Come make old-time music with your feet! Flat-footing (American clogging) is a solo freestyle form of American dance originating in the Appalachian mountains with connections to Western European, Native American and West African dance. Using the toes, heels and ball of the foot to strike and slide across the floor, flat-footing is a percussive dance style that articulates the rhythms of mountain fiddle and banjo music. These workshops have proved very popular worldwide.

Tutor: Nic Gareiss

Nic Gareiss has danced with a huge array of top Irish, American bluegrass and old time artists, including The Chieftains. TheBoston Herald likened him to Fred Astaire, The Irish Times as a "left field tour-de-force with irresistible wow factor". While the Herald in Scotlanddescribed him as "minutely precise, brilliantly witty, hip twistingly agile..."

Aesthetic Philosophy

Join Niko in a brief introduction into Schiller’s life and work on the background of the French Revolution and the “Age of Enlightenment”.

Background: This period in history can be seen as a focal point, mirroring the light of ancient sunken cultures, i.e. the “Greek Mythology”, the inspiration for many modern “New Age” ideas.

Friedrich Schiller’s Letters of the Aesthetic Education of Men (1794-95) can be seen as a pivotal work of this time. Schiller’s aesthetic letters are not an art theory in the usual sense. They are his quixotic enquiry into what is true beauty, and what is art, incorporating the whole human mind and different societies we live in. Schiller understands art not as an elite luxury. He describes true beauty as the matchless manifestation of human dignity.

Tutor: Niko Thomsen

Born 1966 in Luebeck, Germany, Graduated from the humanistic Katharineum zu Luebeck (high school), 1993 Bachelor degree in fine arts from the “Freie Kunststudienstaette Ottersberg”, (near Bremen, Germany) Visited New Zealand in 1996 and 1997, moved here permanently in 1999. Established myself as a working artist with studio in the Wairarapa, from where, together with NZ born Vicki, I am raising a young family of Kiwis.

Wild colour: natural dyeing with local plants

Many of the plants growing wild around you conceal secret colours that you can use as dyes for wool, silk, angora, and other animal fibres. Some plants produce soft shades while others yield striking and vivid hues that surprise and impress.

Discover which plants to forage for and how; then learn safe techniques for working with them. You’ll look at preparation, temperature and timing when using natural plant dyes. You’ll also learn about mordants – when they’re necessary and when they’re not. Most of all you’ll be encouraged to have fun and experiment.

Tutor: Johanna Knox

She works as an editor at Te Ara, the Encyclopedia of New Zealand, and at Whitireia as a tutor for the Diploma of Creative Writing (Online). She is also the author of The Fly Papers, a children’s fiction series about carnivorous plants. In her spare time she is a keen spinner and dyer.

Wild fun – incorporating foraging into your life

All around grow useful, edible, medicinal, and fragrant wild plants – waiting for you to harvest and use them. In this workshop you’ll learn to safely identify and gather several abundant species. You’ll discover their unique nutritional, aromatic, and health-giving properties, and their many practical uses.

You’ll make simple home remedies, along with dyes, bodycare products, and delicious treats. Enjoy the fruits of your labours yourself, or turn them into original handcrafted gifts. You’ll leave the workshop inspired to keep on experimenting. You’ll receive a set of free notes, while Johanna’s book A Forager’s Treasury will be available to buy for those who would like to.

Tutor: Johanna Knox

Johanna is the author of A Forager’s Treasury: A New Zealand guide to finding and using wild plants. She has written about foraging for numerous magazines, and between 2008 and 2011 she had a regular spot on Radio New Zealand’s This Way Up chatting about foraging to Simon Morton. She works as an editor at Te Ara, the Encyclopedia of New Zealand, and at Whitireia as a tutor for the Diploma of Creative Writing (Online). She is also the author of The Fly Papers, a children’s fiction series about carnivorous plants. In her spare time she is a keen crafter and all-round experimenter.

Creative Collage: Journey to your happy place

Take a journey to your happy place via collage; a wonderful, relaxing way of expressing yourself, and creating beautiful art and gifts. All you need are some everyday materials and a willingness to 'play'. We will look at some work by international collage artists, then start experimenting ourselves. Plus tips on composition etc. to really make your creations 'sing'.

Tutor: Anne Taylor

Anne Taylor is a Greytown artist who exhibits regularly with the Main Artery group, and at Aratoi. Her solo show is on at Aratoi - Wairarapa Museum of Art & History during Kokomai (Oct 11-Nov 10). Since completing an Art & Design Foundation course in London, she has attended classes at Inverlochy House, Wellington, but is otherwise self taught. She is interested in social history, women's art and writing, and recent themes have included op shops, Janet Frame and the secret life of cactuses.

Note to Participants: Materials will be provided butplease bring your own scissors for fine paper cutting, own brushes if desired, old magazines & any interesting papers, letters, stamps or photos that you’d like to use.
